Sociology is the study of how and why human beings have become the most successful species on the planet. We explore our unique ability to co-exist in groups of millions and try to understand the shared sets of rules and ideas which allow this to happen.

In Sociology we begin with the lessons taught by parents during childhood and how these help to shape our view of the world. We then explore how settings such as education serve to further shape our views of ourselves and others and encourage us all to behave in the same way. Finally we explore how these shared ideas can lead to some groups being privileged or disadvantaged in our society and try to understand why some people refuse to follow the rules set out and instead turn to crime.

Sociology is a fantastic tool for understanding the world around you, the inequalities faced by certain groups and even the ways in which ideas which you think of as your own have been influenced and shaped by those around you.
